I’m not sure how many people are yet aware of the really magical feature that GitHub offers: the v web-based editor. What doesn’t feel quite as amazing for a low-code guy like me is the steps needed for configuring the local Visual Studio Code client to connect with a GitHub repo. I am personally extremely excited about this, as it removes another barrier for bringing the best tools to developers from anywhere. This also works for machines without Edge or Chrome.

Yes, really! You can upload/download files (and even store them in the cloud using the Files app), as well as open repositories remotely with the built-in GitHub Repositories extension. Edit your code on lower-powered machines like Chromebooks, where you can’t easily install VS Code.Build client-side HTML, JavaScript, and CSS applications in conjunction with the browser tools for debugging.Even if you’re on a restricted machine where you cannot install the full VS Code, you may still be able to use v to view and edit local files.

Microsoft points out some interesting opportunities this brings: Using the modern File System Access API in Edge and Chrome you can develop locally, using the files already on your machine. With Visual Studio Code for the Web, you can open a folder on your local machine and start coding. It is a lightweight version of VS Code running fully in the browser. From this week, you can try out v for yourself.
